Just found this site by entering what turned out to be the headline. I did that because I was thinking about an old Robert Klein routine where he said the only thing you EVER read about James Garfield is that he was "shot by a disappointed office seeker." And there you were, #1 on Google!

While Garfield's shooter was executed for killing him, you're right, the bullet didn't kill him. His doctors did by probing the entry hole with non-sterile instruments and their own dirty hands. Unfortunately antibiotics were a few years off.

The next president to get shot, William McKinley, suffered a similar situation. He was shot at the Pan American Exposition in 1901. It was a huge world's fair type of thing. One of the attractions at the fair was a new device called the X-ray machine. People were walking around with novel photos of their insides. Nobody had thought about using it as a medical device, so they didn't X-Ray McKinley and he died. Modern docs say he might have been saved if they'd known where to look.

Hope this helps! -- TT

I love the off-kilter POV, Chris. It gives the photos a bit more energy. Very nice.

Yeah, this I like! Might you have been more interested in how nicely this sign reflected light and almost blow your emulsion of the film, rather than thinking of how we cannot see what either of them say, those signs that not even the building that lends heavily to get a glance. Yeah, I know, I have had a glass of wine, but nevertheless, this is a marvellous image. Not to mention, oh that grain....
