Hunting late in the day

Hunting late in the day

One of the blogs I read every day is The Online Photographer. It is sort of a famous photo blog, and I assume that everyone who comes here probably goes there. Anyhow, for a while now I’ve been a fan of Cheryl Nicolai’s work, recently Mike highlighted her in a post he does once in a while called ‘Random Excellence.’ He linked to a blog entry she had made on her blog, and I just wanted anyone who comes here and hasn’t been there to go visit this entry for yourself.

Check Cheryl’s blog entry giving advice to photographers here. Or you can go visit Mike’s site and read it there.

A word about the image: Peg and I wandered over to the lake near our house the other day because they are draining the lake in preparation for dredging it. Peg got come great shots of the exposed lake bottom before she spotted this Falcon perched on the top of what I assume is the pump house. I borrowed the 40D from her to grab a couple images of the beautiful bird before I handed it back to her.

I had read that list from Cheryl Nicolai thanks for reminding me of it, good advice. The falcon image is excellent, just the right mood.

Ray, thanks for this comment. I really struggled to find the right way to express the feeling of being there and seeing that wonderful beast. That some of the mood communicated to you really brought a smile to my face.

Thanks for sharing the link, Chris. I had never heard of her, but I really liked what I saw on her site! That was some excellent work. Those are the types of photos that I’d love to take. Very natural!

Before reading about her in TOP, I didn’t know about her. I was completely drawn into her imagery, so much feelings and intense expressions that I hardly could work the rest of that day. What can you say, some really have it.

@Paul: Cheryl’s work really influenced me to take up film again. So, in many ways, she had influenced you without you knowing it.

@Ove: I do love her work, and the kinds of images she captures with Delta 3200 astound me (I’ve never had much luck with the film). Hmm, that reminds me, I should post a couple images I captured on 3200; I’d love to get your thoughts on them.

Wow. I love the way this captures the independence and power of the bird. The falcon seems to take up precisely the correct amount of space in the frame and the weather vane is an ideal complement with all its sharp edges and dagger shapes. The clouds are just right, as well—adding to the mood. Well done, indeed.

Anita, thank you so much. I really struggled with this and, especially coming from you and your excellent work with horses, this is a great compliment.
